Hockey equipment drive

KidSport and the City of Yorkton have teamed up to host a used hockey equipment drive on Wednesday, September 1.

Donations of lightly used hockey equipment, including helmets, skates, gloves and sticks will be collected during City-Wide Registration at the Gallagher Centre. The goal is to collect enough equipment to allow for 100 of Yorkton’s youth who have not had the opportunity to experience Canada’s sport.

The reason for collecting hockey equipment came about from surveys filled out during 2009/2010 youth sport and swim night programming. Hockey was the most requested sport, but there remain a lot of obstacles that prevent youth from participating. By collecting used hockey equipment and allowing youth to access it free of charge, KidSport is hoping to remove some of those barriers.

The City of Yorkton and KidSport will also be accepting donations of other, nonhockey related sports equipment during this drive. Together, the two organizations have established a permanent Sports Bank, which will collect, store and distribute equipment to youth. A second drive will take place during Spring City-wide to collect for summer oriented sports.
