The weekly Harness racing at the Yorkton Exhibition grounds had a distinct green flavour to it this past week.

The Riderville at the Races evening was one to remember for Roughrider fans and harness racing enthusiasts alike.

The festivities featured legions of fans that turned out wearing Roughrider gear and shirts declaring support for the Yorkton is Riderville campaign.

One of the main sources of excitement came courtesy of the special guest, former ‘Rider receiver Matt Dominguez.

Dominguez, who makes his home in Regina full-time, says that he was more than happy to show up and lend Yorkton his support.

“I've come out to help show some support for Yorkton,” he indicates.

To Dominguez, the chance to come and experience Yorkton's Riderville spirit was irresistible. The opportunity to experience harness racing for the first time was also an enticing one.

“That was added incentive,” Dominguez adds.

Although he appears to still be in playing shape, the talented wide receiver hasn't adorned a Rider jersey in a couple of years. Still, Dominguez says he is happy to promote the Roughriders whenever he can.

“Anytime you can get out and promote the Roughriders and what Yorkton is doing to win this thing, I'm there for helping out,” Dominguez mentions.

Dominguez pointed out that he has always enjoyed his trips to Yorkton, including a visit earlier this year as a speaker at a football banquet.

Dominguez has enjoyed continued status as a local celebrity, despite the conclusion of his playing career.

The former wide receiver attributes this to television appearances and status as a Roughrider representative.

That said, Dominguez still makes sure to devote his time to meaningful clauses.

“I also make sure that I devote my time to worthy causes,” he emphasizes.

On the decision to stay local, Dominguez says the choice was a no brainer.

The ridiculous hosing prices in the United States, the exodus of family members to various universities were factors in his decision to make Regina home.

“The most important thing is we enjoy it in Saskatchewan. We enjoy it in Regina. We've got a great church, we've got friends that aren't football friends,” he includes.

As it stands, the ‘07 Grey Cup champion is very happy with his life in Saskatchewan.

“I hang out with the Mayor. Who can say they hang out with the Mayor? (laughs),” Dominguez says, “The way we live, the way we like to live, it suits us better to stay here, and so we stayed here. Two of my kids are Canadian.”
