Yorkton relay event planned

It’s a worthwhile event and this year it will be happening in Yorkton.

The Canadian Cancer Society has announced it will be holding its first ever Relay for Life event in Yorkton on June 24, 2011 at the Gloria Hayden Community Centre.

Relay For Life is the signature event of the Canadian Cancer Society.

“It’s an unforgettable event that raises awareness, helps those touched by cancer, and empowers people to fight back against this disease,” details Gloria Diliberto, Manager of the Parkland Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society.

“It’s a fun-filled, overnight experience that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, commit to fight back through healthy lifestyle changes, and raise money for the fight against cancer.”

As in previous years, Relay Teams will gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest grassroots fundraising event in the nation. Relay For Life annually brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools and communities.

The upcoming event will run from Friday evening until Saturday morning.

It can attract in the area of 600 or more participants says Diliberto adding, in 2011 the Parkland Unit will host two Relay for Life events: one in Madge Lake on June 10 and the other in Yorkton on June 24. Opening ceremonies start at 7 p.m. and Closing ceremonies begin shortly before 7 a.m.
