Fatal accident in southeast Saskatchewan

One person is dead following an accident involving a pick-up truck and a railcar on the 604 grid road near the southeast community of Willmar.

A pick-up truck was being driven southbound on the grid when it collided with a crude oil tanker that was being positioned to off-load crude oil for rail transport by CN Rail. A 48-year-old male who was driving the pick-up truck was killed. There weren't any other occupants in the truck.

CN staff observed the collision and were able to stop the slow moving train immediately. The tanker was empty and there was no environmental spill to deal with. The train did not derail.

The intersection was marked with a railroad crossing yield sign, railroad crossing signs and street lamps. There was heavy fog in the area at the time and that may have been a contributing factor in the collision.

An RCMP Traffic Re-Constructionist was called in to investigate the collision and Estevan RCMP officers remained on scene until the vehicle was removed and the intersection was reopened. Traffic was diverted a short distance around the crossing.

The investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing.

Willmar is located northeast of Lampman.
